Tras hacer dos vivisecciones de matrimonios en crisis —en American Beauty (1999) y Revolutionary Road (2008)—, Sam Mendes vuelve su ojo crítico a la pareja una vez más, pero esta vez con un tipo de crisis distinto: ¿qué es lo que ocurre cuando se espera la llegada de un hijo? Éste es el arranque formal de El mejor lugar del mundo, cinta en la que la pareja formada por Burt (John Krasinsky de The Office) y Verona (la habitualmente antipática Maya Rudolph) decide buscar precisamente eso: un lugar en donde echar raíces cuando ambos descubren que se convertirán en padres. A partir de ahí, se suceden una serie de viajes a lo largo y ancho del territorio de los Estados Unidos, para visitar a familiares y amigos con el fin de encontrar el sitio más idóneo para criar al bebé —una niña— que viene en camino. Lo que en manos de un director con menos talento que Mendes se transformaría en una aburrida comedia romántica con personajes caricaturizados y escenografía de turismo pro yanqui, con la típica metáfora de viaje exterior/viaje interior añadida con calzador, se transforma en un collage de las familias que no sólo habitan en el vecino país del norte, sino —por magia de la globalización— cada vez en más países.
De origen británico, Mendes es un director que, además de tener muy buen toque para crear atmósferas cotidianas, resulta lo suficientemente inteligente como para dar al espectador la mirada de sus personajes sin artificios y, por lo mismo, hacernos disfrutar con ellos del descubrimiento (o redescubrimiento) de su pequeño mundo. Por otro lado, con esta película Mendes parece querer reflejar su lado más luminoso y ligero. No sólo porque la película contenga excelentes momentos de humor muy sutil y cierta calidez interpretativa, sino por toda la atmósfera de simplicidad y sencillez que empapa a la cinta de principio a fin. Esto funciona en buena parte gracias a Krasinsky y al peso de la mala leche de la Rudolph, quien es incapaz de interpretar a su personaje sin caer en el exceso y a veces irrita profundamente al espectador. El resto del elenco, el cual incluye a la brillante Maggie Gyllenhaal, da coherencia a una galería de figuras casi esperpénticas que, no obstante, acaban por recordarnos a alguien a quien hemos conocido en algún momento de nuestra vida.

Al apartarse de su oscuridad e intensidad habituales, Mendes ofrece una cinta no menos brillante que sus trabajos anteriores, pero sí mucho más accesible. Quienes obsesivamente buscan mensajes en todo producto que ven en el cine, estarán satisfechos y aquellos que aprecian trabajos técnicamente logrados, con actuaciones de calidad, también lo estarán. El mejor lugar del mundo tiene algo para todos y funciona en distintos niveles.

¿Por qué insisten en hacer traducciones tan estúpidas de los títulos originales? Debería haber alguna ley para proteger a los creadores de cine y que no hagan estas tonterías: "Ahí vamos", sería una traducción más cercana al título original y al espíritu de la película: una pareja que va a tener un hijo y no sabe exactamente qué deben ofrecerle al niño; no se trata sólo de buscar un buen lugar geográfico sino toda una reflexión sobre ser padres.
