Al trascender las convenciones cómodas de lo que hoy se llama comedia romántica, Dos amantes es una película que se permite un retorno a un tema que parece haber pasado de moda en el cine: la historia de amor para adultos.
James Gray (director de la sorprendente We Own the Night) pone a la vista, en cada una de las imágenes del filme, su absoluta negativa a esconderse bajo los formulismos de género. Esta es una obra desnuda que parece entregarse al espectador en estado crudo, a corazón abierto, como la vida misma. No renuncia a los elementos del melodrama; sin embargo, resulta imposible no percibir, en el torbellino emocional de la película, una mirada enigmática, original, que hace ver, por elemental comparación, a productos como la saga Crepúsculo como lo que son: cine chatarra.
Estrenada en Cannes 2008 y con una aparición tardía en las pantallas locales, la cinta narra la historia de un hombre en crisis que se halla de pronto ante dos alternativas: una posible novia dulce y sensible, aprobada por su entorno familiar, o una mujer misteriosa que lo atrae de manera inexplicable. Joaquin Phoenix, como Leonard, hace un trabajo notable, emocional, que abraza lo mismo sus filias que sus traumas y no tiene miedo a expresar lo que siente. El triángulo amoroso est completado por dos mujeres extraordinarias: la deslumbrante y volátil Michelle (Gwyneth Palthrow, en una interpretación de alto calibre) y la generosa Sandra Cohen (Vinessa Shaw). El reparto queda redondeado por la hermosa Isabella Rossellini como Ruth, una madre cálida y maravillosa, en uno de los mejores roles que ha tenido en los últimos años, desde su aparición en la bienintencionada y tristemente fallida adaptación de La fiesta del chivo).
Así se desarrolla, con un aire brutalmente honesto, una cinta que Gray dibuja con cuidado, al valerse de la trágica vulnerabilidad del hombre enamorado que confronta al yugo familiar, las trampas de la fe y la tradición (en este caso, un hogar judío ortodoxo muy cerrado), la ilusión del libre albedrío, el impulso irrefrenable de la pasión y las trágicas consecuencias de la búsqueda de la felicidad.

Dos amantes es un filme duro y hermoso. Gray retrata distintos aspectos de Nueva York en una escala de claroscuros que dan vida a los momentos capturados en celuloide. La Paltrow recuerda a los espectadores por qué es una gran actriz y no una estrellita de cine –su Michelle es una criatura extraña y hermosa, monstruo y ángel, muy cercana a su desgarradora interpretación de Sylvia Plath hace unos años–, mientras que Joaquin Phoenix (en la que ostensiblemente ha anunciado como su última pelicula al retirarse del medio, algo que aún está por verse) estremece con un trabajo finamente calibrado.
Cinta adulta, sin complacencias o medias tintas, esta es una oportunidad de ver cine como el que todavía se hacía en los setenta y los ochenta, antes de que el cinema “comercial” se convirtiera en territorio casi exclusivo del adolescente estadounidense, desprovisto de la capacidad de reflexión y crítica, elementos que en esta película son evidentes y, hasta cierto punto, indispensables. A ver sin falta esta obra más que recomendable para personas sensibles como para amantes de lo que es el buen cine o que buscan alternativas a la basura que inunda a las salas cada semana.
