Bucky Pizzarelli : amo de la guitarra de siete cuerdas

Por más de cincuenta años, Bucky Pizzarelli ha sido una leyenda viviente y ha formado parte de ese grupo de músicos que mantiene vivo al jazz tradicional. Gran intérprete de swing y amo de la guitarra de siete cuerdas, a sus más de ochenta años de edad sigue en plenitud de forma musical y al parecer aún tiene mucho que dar.
John Paul “Bucky” Pizzarelli nació el 9 de enero de 1926 en Paterson, New Jersey, y aprendió el arte de la guitarra y el banjo desde muy joven. Sus tíos eran músicos profesionales y algunas veces tocaban en reuniones familiares. Conforme fue avanzando, Bucky se les unía frecuentemente. Su primera guitarra fue una archtop Gibson, modelo que en ese tiempo era muy caro. Durante la secundaria fue guitarrista en un pequeño grupo que tocaba música clásica.
Comenzó su carrera profesional en 1944, a los diecisiete años de edad, cuando se unió a la orquesta de Vaughn Monroe. Casi al final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, cumplió con su servicio militar (donde organizó una banda de baile sin autorización oficial) y en 1946 regresó con Monroe, con quien permaneció por cinco años más.
En 1952, Pizzarelli ingresó a la cadena de televisión NBC, como miembro de la orquesta de Doc Severinsen en los programas The Tonight Show de Johnny Carson y The Katie Smith Show. Durante varios años, pudo acompañar a los músicos invitados de ambas emisiones, lo cual le permitió tocar una gran variedad de géneros musicales y diversificar sus conocimientos y aptitudes.
A mediados de los años cincuenta, el guitarrista fue miembro del trío The Three Sounds, junto con el bajista Andy Simplins y el pianista Gene Harris. Hizo varias giras con Benny Goodman hasta el año en que éste falleció, 1986. A principios de los setenta, empezó a grabar como líder, interpretando muchos homenajes a músicos de los años treinta. Dirigió y grabó en dúos y tríos con Zoot Sims (1976), Bud Freeman (1975), Stephanie Grappelli (1979), Stanley Turrentine y con su hijo John Pizzarelli también guitarrista (ver video), entre muchos más.

Además de ser un dedicado defensor de la música tradicional para guitarra y los diferentes estilos de tocarla, también desarrolló un estilo muy personal que lo caracteriza. En sus grabaciones, demuestra no únicamente su gran talento para los solos, sino su perfecto acoplamiento como integrante de grupos.
A sus ochenta y tres años, Bucky Pizzarelli continúa presentándose en conciertos y sigue siendo reconocido por sus extraordinarias dotes con la guitarra eléctrica y su gran sensibilidad como guitarrista clásico. En una reciente entrevista para Modern Guitars, comentó que entre sus mayores satisfacciones está el haber tocado música de Django Reinhardt con Stephane Grappelli, el haber alternado muchas veces con Les Paul o el haber sido dirigido por gente como Benny Goodman. En esa misma charla, recomendó a los nuevos guitarristas de jazz que toquen mucho, pero que también conozcan todo el repertorio de standards que les sea posible y que aprendan completos los libros de Johnny Mercer y Duke Ellington.
Entre su amplia discografía es más que recomendable conseguir y disfrutar de sus más recientes grabaciones, como Moonglow (Sindrome, 2005), Generations (Arbors, 2007, una maravilla, al lado de su hijo, el igualmente talentoso guitarrista y cantante John Pizzarelli), Around the Worldin 80 Years (Victoria, 2006), Lost Songs of 1936 (Victoria, 2006) y Five for Freddie: Bucky’s Tribute to Freddie Green (2007).
