El nombre de la banda inglesa Cornershop se originó de un estereotipo sobre los asiáticos británicos, el cual afirma que éstos siempre poseen tiendas en las esquinas (corner= esquina, shop= tienda). En tal cliché hay un obvio racismo, sustentado en la idiosincracia discriminatoria producto del pasado colonial británico, misma con la cual han tenido que vivir los inmigrantes indios y sus descendientes (al igual que otras etnias, como la paquistaní o la caribeña, por ejemplo). En esa realidad dura y cotidiana que los enfrenta con skinheads, neonazis, hooligans y políticos conservadores crecen manifiestos sociales agudos, danzarines y agridulces como el de este grupo cuya proclama es una fusión de música india, brit pop, rock alternativo y dance electrónico.
A principios de los noventa, en Leicester, Inglaterra, el multiinstrumentista, cantante y compositor de origen indio Tjinder Singh, su hermano Avtar (bajo), Ben Ayers (guitarra) y el baterista David Chambers formaron a esta banda. Su álbum debut, Hold on It Hurts, data de 1994. Al año y con cambios en la formación, lanzaron Woman’s Gotta Have It, pero fue tiempo después cuando When I Was Born for the 7th Time les dio su mayor fama. El remix del sencillo “Brimful of Asha” (sobre la base riffmica de “Sweet Jane”), realizado por Norman Cook (alias Fatboy Slim), se convirtió en un enorme éxito. A éste le siguió la producción de Handcream for a Generation y el reciente Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast (del 2009).
Estos intérpretes de música indie han encontrado tres maneras de producir una forma artística contemporánea viable y en contacto con los escuchas en general. En primera instancia, por medio de su progresivo provecho de doble vía, es decir, la dilución de las influencias maternas en una música “extranjera”; en segundo lugar, mediante el empleo creativo en forma divertida de la retroalimentación recibida de ambas culturas; finalmente, al continuar con la antigua tradición roquera de la política del baile, o sea, ejercer la critica mientras se disfruta.
El nuevo disco (Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast) es la reafirmación de que el rock sigue siendo el grito dirigido sin restricciones a una gran audiencia, ése que ha contribuido más a rehacer la identidad británica que cualquier otra forma artística o secular. Siempre ha sido una mezcla en todos los sentidos. Es una forma democrática y es multicultural; es negra y asiática, de clase obrera, de clase media, etcétera. Si Cornershop habla de ello en sus canciones es porque también dicha historia les pertenece y eso es algo que todos deben saber. Su música es inteligente e ingeniosa, una permanente descripción irónica de la vida británica contemporánea y por ello citan en sus melodías tanto a los Beatles como a T.Rex o los Rolling Stones. Es una forma de identificación que no se basa en el rechazo, sino en la creatividad.
De igual manera, el misterioso sur de Asia, es decir la India, ha ejercido una influencia muy significativa sobre el rock desde la década de los sesenta. Según la mitología del género, este subcontinente es una tierra de sensibilidades expansivas. Es el ying de las fuerzas primarias frente al yang de la ciencia occidental contemporánea. Esa injerencia ha sentado sus precedentes vía la Gran Bretaña. El caso más famoso ha sido el de los Beatles, quienes con “Norwegian Wood”, “Within You Without You” y otras composiciones –y como discípulos del Maharishi Mahesh Yogui– incorporaron un poco de música raga y verdades védicas en su obra media y tardía.
La influencia india hizo acto de presencia incluso en e
l rock que carecía de conexiones aparentes con gurúes o misticismo. El grupo Echo and The Bunnymen, convertido en algo tan poco exótico como la sombría penumbra romántica, utilizó el sonido raga en su mejor canción, “The Cutter”, y, por supuesto, los Rolling Stones incluyeron el toque indio con el uso de la cítara en el seminal tema “
Paint it Black” y en grandes partes del Their Satanic Majesties Request.

Los roqueros ingleses, pues, han tenido especial apego hacia lo indio por la misma causa por la cual sus colegas estadounidenses se sienten ligados a la música negra. Los originarios de las Indias Orientales
conforman más del veinte por ciento de la población de Londres y de Birmingham. De igual manera, conforme el número de inmigrantes procedentes de la India y Paquistán crecía en las islas británicas, los músicos ingleses empezaron a buscar inspiración directamente en Brixton o Leicester, en lugar de realizar el tradicional rodeo sentimental por Memphis.
Por otro lado, el proceso indio de transculturación del "ciclo índico" (que va incansable y sin interrupción de la Gran Bretaña a la India y de vuelta y que se ha enriquecido a lo largo de la historia y de su demografía) también encierra una influencia catalítica al engendrar una fértil escena musical en cada región. A fin de cuentas, el rock no es un arte de formas fijas, sino de inflexiones que se producen a base de modelos remotos y en el ámbito de las grandes urbes.
Tal es el caso de Cornershop, músicos creativos que han tenido la ventaja de abrevar en fuentes de una larga tradición (en ambos países), dotadas de caracteres propicios que a ellos les ha correspondido universalizar, con un sonido más que reconocible. Un estilo que desarrolla un género de música popular a partir de la asimilación cultural.
