Nadie podría haber firmado ese guión. Mientras el extraordinario músico de jazz Bill Evans moría en Nueva York, a miles de kilómetros, en el otro extremo del continente americano, una niña atípica trataba de transcribir al papel las piezas del pianista para poder interpretarlo. Se llamaba Eliane Elias y desde entonces no dejó de convivir con el fantasma de Evans. En el siglo veintiuno, le comenzó a cantar.
Del músico la apasionó su forma de tocar, la manera de armonizar y de usar la melodía. Ella escribía cada nota en el papel pautado y después se sentaba frente al teclado y acompañaba al Evans del tocadiscos. Los álbumes pertenecían a su madre, quien tocaba el piano clásico pero amaba también al jazz. La niña se crió en tal ambiente. Sus raíces fueron esas y las de su natal Sao Paulo, Brasil. La combinación le proporcionó la amplitud suficiente para sentirse a gusto en todas ellas.
Estuvo tan dotada física y musicalmente que a los diecisiete años era la muchacha en el espectáculo de Vinicius de Moraes, a quien acompañó hasta su muerte. El espíritu del poeta la tomó bajo su manto. En tres años estuvo más que situada en su país como acompañante, pero en Brasil la música instrumental –su prioridad– era minoritaria, pocas personas la apreciaban. Comenzó a sentir nostalgia de lo que no había vivido, del mítico Nueva York, de donde venían los discos que le gustaban.
Decidió cruzar las fronteras: las de Brasil, las de la música regional, las de la comodidad y la autocomplacencia. A los veintiún años tomó el avión rumbo a la Urbe de Hierro. Así que en Manhattan aterrizó sola aquella joven brasileña, blanca, rubia, para hacerse de un lugar en el mundo del jazz nocturno y de hombres en su mayoría negros. El valor se lo proporcionó la seguridad en sí misma, en su capacidad musical.
Hoy, tras un cuarto de siglo en la escena, con una madurez serena y propositiva, decide no respaldarse con aquel fantasma de Bill Evans sino dialogar con él, hablarle desde lo más íntimo, mostrarle el conocimiento que tiene de él, de la compenetración con su música, con su forma de tocar, con su pensamiento estético. La experiencia dentro del género le ha clamado incluso por una nueva interpretación, no sólo con el piano, sino también y de manera extraordinaria con el canto.
Aunque Eliane Elias nunca tuvo la intención de dedicarse a cantar, en la actualidad ha desarrollado la voz con el objeto de hablar con Bill Evans en palabras, con el honor y la responsabilidad de grabar las últimas cosas que él escribió y que ya no pudo interpretar debido a su muerte prematura. El casamiento con el postrer contrabajo del pianista, Marc Johnson, así como el descubrimiento de unos demos de Evans entregados una semana antes de morir y olvidados por ahí por Marc, fueron el detonante de un proyecto único.
En uno de los lados del cassette se oye a Bill ensayar y en el otro habla de las piezas que está escribiendo y las va tocando. Al escucharlas, a Eliane la recorrió un escalofrío de los pies a la cabeza. Se le despertó el recuerdo y las emociones de cuando niña. Así que se puso a trabajar en seguida en la transcripción de la cinta. Al acabar la primera pieza empezó a tocarla con él y se le salieron las lágrimas. Después de treinta años en la música no pensó que volvería a sentir aquello.

En el disco homenaje (Something for You, Blue Note) hay clásicos como “But Not for Me” o “”My Foolish Heart” y composiciones como “Waltz for Debby”, obras que van desde los inicios de Evans hasta lo último que compuso. También está una pieza a la que Eliane tituló “Here’s Something for You” y para la cual escribió la letra. Un día empezó a canturrearla mientras cocinaba, corrió al piano y comenzó a fluir la letra con una combinación de los títulos que él hizo famosos.
Eliane decidió entonces hacer un álbum de canciones, sin grandes improvisaciones, en el que pasa de una canción a otra para poder contar una historia más completa. Evans era una persona muy reservada, un hombre muy introvertido. Su música, pese a instantes de alegría y de comunicar ese estado de ánimo, tenía muchos momentos de introspección. En el lado personal no era feliz, a causa de su dependencia descontrolada de las drogas que finalmente lo mataron.
Bill Evans cambió la historia del piano, le dio una función mucho más orquestal que la que tenía con los músicos de bebop. Amaba la armonía europea, la de Ravel y Debussy. Le gustaban los impresionistas y los románticos como Chopin; aquel refinamiento armónico europeo mezclado con los ritmos del jazz. Creó una escuela de armonía y no sólo eso, también le sacaba al instrumento un sonido hermoso.
Evans hizo al trío (piano, bajo, batería) la gran estrella del jazz. Una magnífica forma de expresión. Él fue quien la comenzó y Eliane ha seguido con su homenaje en esa línea: se hace acompañar de Marc Johnson y de Joey Baron, respectivamente. En el trío de Bill Evans existió siempre la comunicación entre los instrumentos, hizo de ello un arte virtuoso. Ella continúa la tradición con un disco mágico y evocador.
