Ámsterdam, Holanda. Mientras pedaleo por la Koninginneweg, me da por parafrasear a uno de los Marx, pero no a Groucho sino a Karl: un fantasma recorre al mundo, el fantasma de los Beatles. Dicho fantasma ha comenzado su andar precisamente aquí, en la capital neerlandesa que hace cuarenta años escogió John Lennon para pasar su luna de miel.
2009 ha sido otro año beatle plagado de celebraciones, evocaciones, reediciones y festejos. El 29 de marzo pasado se cumplieron cuatro décadas de aquel hecho que atrajo las miradas del mundo hacia un cuarto de hotel, una habitación donde Lennon habló durante una semana, de manera incansable, sobre la paz, esa entelequia que continúa obsesionándonos.
Atravieso con la bicicleta el Museumplein y desemboco en la Spiegelgracht, una elegante cuadra larga con un canal en medio que al final se convierte en la Spiegelstraat, la prestigiosa calle de los anticuarios y galeristas, al pasar uno de los puentes más transitados por propios y extraños. Ahí, entre el museo Appel de arte contemporáneo y la variada oferta plástica de las tiendas de arte, está la Galerie Moderne de Nico Koster, espacio donde se exhiben los retratos que este fotógrafo holandés le tomó a John y su pareja en aquel ilustre ritual mediático llamado Bed-in. Son fotografías en blanco y negro que han proporcionado la imagen al colectivo lennonononiano Wedding Album.
En los aparadores que dan a la calle están las fotos de la pareja mientras desayuna, vestidos ambos de bata y camisón blancos y encima de ellos los letreros escritos a mano que sintetizaron su inédita acción y perpetuaron sus reclamos para la posteridad: BED PEACE–HAIR PEACE.
¿Por qué eligió John Lennon a esta ciudad para iniciar su demanda y su petición al mundo? El verdadero espíritu de Ámsterdam es la tolerancia y no es un espíritu nuevo, producto de la posmodernidad, sino uno histórico que se remonta cinco siglos atrás. Desde entonces, Holanda ha sido sinónimo de ello y la capital, su lugar culminante y ejemplar. En Ámsterdam, los 1539 puentes que existen (que en concreto representan al año de llegada de la primera oleada de inmigrantes) se erigen como metáfora de la imaginación. Todo puente es único, todo puente quiere serlo hacia algún destino y todo puente es la mirada de la ciudad hacia lo que importa.
Por eso Lennon la escogió y por eso me dirijo ahora, tras mirar las históricas ilustraciones, al hotel Hilton, el lugar donde el beatle puso al lecho dentro de sus utopías, en aquel acto dadaísta que consagró a la cama como sitio de protesta. El festejo lo llevó a cabo el Netherlands Beatles Fan Club, una de las organizaciones de admiradores con más antigüedad en el orbe (1963). Hubo exposición de fotos, pinturas, esculturas y memorabilia, conferencias, exhibición de documentales y conciertos con bandas tributo. Así que estaciono mi bicicleta frente al hotel ubicado en el número 138 de la avenida Apollolaan y me preparo para el festín.
La cereza del pastel es la visita guiada a la habitación 902 (ex Presidencial), llamada ahora “John & Yoko Suite”, que cuesta la friolera de mil setecientos cincuenta euros la noche, para todo aquel que desee pasar una velada ahí, rodeado de recuerdos. Ésos de los que habla Lennon en “The Ballad of John and Yoko”: “Talking in our bed for a week/The news people said/'Hey, what you doin' in bed?’/I said, 'We're only tryin' to get us some peace!”. Siete días (del 25 al 31 de marzo de 1969) discurrió sobre el tema, de nueve de la mañana a nueve de la noche. Una forma constructiva y nada cínica de aprovechar la publicidad generada por su reciente boda en Gibraltar y por su fama personal. El aún integrante del cuarteto de Liverpool (por poco tiempo más) forjó así su compromiso con la causa antibélica.

Este año, el fantasma de los Beatles recorre al mundo. Ha iniciado su andanza en esta ciudad con la remembranza de aquel anhelo pacifista. Cuarenta años también cumple Abbey Road, un álbum clásico que ya es objeto de nuevas escuchas, revisiones y lecturas. Se dio asimismo la aparición de un videojuego (The Beatles: Rock Band) en el cual se pueden interpretar sus canciones al unísono del grupo. De igual forma, se dio la remasterización (¿definitiva?) de sus discos, cuya aparición puede hacer que los Beatles culminen el año como el grupo con mayores ventas, ¡a cuatro décadas de su disolución! Marketing puro y duro. “Cosas de aparecidos”, diría el otro Marx, Karl, ese viejo filósofo.

Ya entrada la madrugada, mientras regrese pedaleando a mi casa, me daré el tiempo de pensar –gracias al clima templado– en el carisma, en el uso de los medios y en los motivos que condujeron a John Lennon a realizar tamaña cruzada por el mundo y también sonreiré por las respuestas al porqué no le dieron a él, en su momento, el Premio Nobel de la Paz.
